Inceptum Norwich, a business formed by a group of year 12 students at Norwich School, who are taking part in this year's Young Enterprise Programme’s company scheme, have produced and published, Norwich: A colouring guide for a fine city, featuring 15 historic buildings and locations throughout the city (price £5.99). 
 
The Maids Head Hotel in Tombland, one of the buildings in the colouring guide, is selling the booklet at hotel reception. Guests on the Maids Head’s Historic Norwich package receive a copy in their room. The hotel has also combined with Inceptum Norwich to offer dinner for two for the best coloured-in booklet. Completed guides should be handed-in at hotel reception by February 28.
A framed Edwardian watercolour of the exterior of the Maids Head Hotel in Norwich, painted by Walter Hayward-Young in 1908 for a series of postcards of the hotel, has been discovered in a loft in Surrey.
 
Graham O’Connell, who lives in Frimley Green, Surrey, bought the painting 20 years ago in Camberley, along with a number of other paintings, drawings and documents. He was tidying up items in his loft, found the painting and decided to offer it to the Maids Head.
City College Norwich students Katie Carruth and Robyn Jackson, who won October’s Maids Head Apple Cake Bake off, returned to the hotel on Monday to take part in a Marie Curie Norfolk Knobbler cook off to create a new dish for the hotel’s Wine Press Restaurant. The Maids Head also announced that Marie Curie will be the hotel’s charity for 2017. 
 
Robyn worked alongside Marcin ‘Magic’ Pomierny, Maids Head Head Chef and Katie was paired with Charlie Hodson, Norfolk Food & Drink Champion.  Each team had 10 ingredients to create and cook a dish in one hour; the main ingredient was the Norfolk Knobbler sausage, from Archer’s Butchers. Sausage sales are raising money for Marie Curie in Norfolk.

City College Wins Great Norfolk Bake Off

City College Norwich students, Katie Carruth and Robyn Jackson won the Great Norfolk Bake Off, celebrating Apple Day, at the Maids Head Hotel in Tombland on Tuesday, October 25. 
 
Working in pairs, three Maids Head teams, drawn from departments across the hotel, battled it out against three teams of City College first year catering students. Their task was to bake an apple cake using the same recipe. Charlie Hodson, Norfolk Food & Drink champion was master of ceremonies on the day.

The Maids Head Hotel launched a new Norwich Summer Staycation package at the Royal Norfolk Show, with a ‘beach burial’, on the hotel’s stand.  Amy Elvin, the hotel’s wedding co-ordinator is pictured being buried by Carey Briggs from Pensthorpe Natural Park, hotel colleague Katherine Renhard and Louise Rout from Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden.

Murtel Fish Ale at Maids Head Hotel

The Maids Head Hotel has launched Murtel Fish Ale, a new signature beer brewed by Woodforde’s, in time for the Norwich City of Ale festival, which runs from May 26 to June 5.

The beer takes its name from the Murtel Fish Tavern, the Maids Head’s predecessor, which was trading on Wensum Street, then known as Cook Rowe, from at least 1287. The change of name to the Maids Head was confirmed by John Paston in a letter dated 2 November 1482, in which he recommended the inn as a good place to stable your horse.

The Maids Head Hotel in Norwich is celebrating the award of a second AA Rosette for the WinePress Restaurant, following the annual AA inspection, which rated the food offering at Five Star quality. 
 
The overall Four Star merit score for the hotel across all assessment areas including cleanliness, service, bedrooms, bathrooms, food and hospitality increased to 81% (78% in 2015).

News from the Maids Head Hotel

The Lord Mayor of Norwich, Councillor Brenda Arthur is officially launching the Maids Head Hotel's new outdoor seating area, overlooking Tombland, on Friday 15 April at a morning coffee event starting at 10.30am.

The Maids Head is donating 20% of all coffee and tea sales on the day in the hotel lounges and outdoor seating area to Sistema in Norwich, the Lord Mayor's Civic Charity 2015/16.

Two All Things Norfolk business members, Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden and The Maids Head Hotel are celebrating English Tourism Week which is from 5-13 March.

Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden is celebrating with special English Tourism Cupcakes whilst the Maids Head Hotel has created a special Norfolk Martini, featuring 50ml Wild Knight vodka, 25ml dry vermouth, 20ml Norfolk elderflower cordial and a sprig of Rosemary. To make your own, muddle rosemary and ingredients together, shake with ice and strain in to a coupé or martini glass and garnish with rosemary.

A 70 year-old bill, in near perfect condition, for a one-week stay at the Maids Head Hotel in Norwich, along with a tariff card, has been donated to the hotel and provides a remarkable insight into a visit to Norfolk in the immediate post-war period.
 
Mrs and Miss Dale stayed in the Maids Head’s room 58, from 16 to 23 October 1945 at 17 shillings (85p) a day, had breakfast every morning at 7 shillings (35p) for 2, lunch on four occasions at 8 shillings (40p) for two and dinner on six evenings at 10 shillings (50p) for two. Their total bill came to £14/6s/4d (£14.32p).
