Green Flag awards in North Norfolk

Holt Country Park, Sadler’s Wood and Pretty Corner, near Sheringham, have again been named amongst the best open spaces in the UK, winning the right to fly the prestigious Green Flag for 2015/16.

It is the eleventh year in a row that Holt Country Park, which, like the other two winners, is run by North Norfolk District Council (NNDC), has earned a Green Flag for being welcoming, safe, clean and well-managed.

In 2005, Holt Country Park was the first in Norfolk to win a Green Flag - an award that demands year-on-year improvement for the status to be retained. It’s been an exciting twelve months for the park with the addition of a new wildlife garden and the sighting of a Scarce Tortoiseshell butterfly.  Until 2014 there has been only one sighting of the butterfly (also known as the Yellow Legged Tortoiseshell) in Britain.

Holt Country Park was joined by Sadler’s Wood, just outside North Walsham, when it achieved a Green Flag in 2012, and then by Pretty Corner Woods the following year.  A joint application was made this year for this first time by NNDC and the Woodland Trust.  Woodland Trust manages the adjacent ‘Old Wood’ which is now included by the Green Flag award.

The three sites are among a record-breaking 1582 parks and green spaces that have been awarded with a prestigious Green Flag Award for 2015/2016.

Becky Palmer, NNDC Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services, said: “North Norfolk has a host of beautiful open spaces and I am delighted that Holt Country Park, Sadler’s Wood and Pretty Corner Woods have attracted national recognition once again.

“The Green Flag Award highlights that our staff take great care in looking after our green areas for the benefit of the many groups, visitors and residents who enjoy them throughout the year.

Cllr. Palmer added: “Not only do our award-winning green spaces offer peace and tranquillity; they are also wonderful places for children and their families to have fun while learning about our natural environment.  Come and visit this summer, our countryside rangers have a full programme of activities for the whole family to enjoy!”

The award, handed out by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to visitors that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.

International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme. All the flags flying this year are a testament to the efforts of the thousands of men and women, both staff and volunteers, who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”

  • NWT is Charity of the year for North Norfolk District Council

North Norfolk District Council’s Chairman has invited Norfolk Wildlife Trust to be his Charity of the Year, with money raised supporting conservation grazing and family learning.

Dr Clive Stockton has a personal life-long association with nature and wished to support a charity that specifically works to conserve the fragile habitats of Norfolk and raise awareness of the importance of wildlife.

Funds raised by NNDC will be used in two key areas of NWT’s work across Norfolk: to support conservation grazing with rare native breeds and to extend engagement with young children in Sure Start centres.

Conservation grazing with native breed cattle, sheep and ponies protects important areas for wildlife. Without regular grazing, many of our rare and fragile habitats and the species they support would be at risk of being overwhelmed by more dominant plants. NNDC has already shown its own commitment to conservation grazing through the establishment of its Bagot goat herd, 15 of which are on long-term loan to NWT in the Brecks.

  • Holt Country Park, Pretty Corner Woods and Sadler’s Woods recognised amongst best UK open spaces

Sadler’s Wood, near North Walsham, has re-joined Holt Country Park and Pretty Corner Woods in being recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme as one of the very best in the world.

Holt Country Park holds its position as a green space for the 14th year running and was joined by Pretty Corner Woods in 2013. Sadler’s Wood first received the accolade in 2012 and despite just missing out last year it has now re-claimed its place thanks to the hard work of our Countryside Team.

The parks are among a record-breaking 1,970 UK parks and green spaces and 131 in thirteen other countries around the world that will today receive a prestigious Green Flag Award – the mark of a quality park or green space.

  • Flying the (Blue) Flags for North Norfolk’s fabulous beaches

It’s official: North Norfolk continues to have some of the best beaches in the country.

The beaches in Cromer, East Runton, Mundesley, Sea Palling, Sheringham and West Runton have all been awarded prestigious Blue Flags for another year – and that means the 45-mile North Norfolk coastline is home to half of all the Blue Flag beaches in the east of England.

The awards are given out only to those beaches that have the highest quality of water, facilities, environmental education and management, with superb levels of cleanliness and safety. It means the hundreds of thousands of residents and visitors who visit North Norfolk’s beaches each year can be sure they are enjoying top-notch destinations.

North Norfolk is the only district in the county that has been awarded any Blue Flags this year.
