With celebrations taking place across the UK this year to commemorate 200 years of the RNLI, Sheringham Lifeboat station held a number of events last week with lots more planned.

4th March saw the official 200th birthday of the RNLI and Sheringham hosted a number of events including a street collection, a special celebration at St Peter's church, a gala dinner and a unique video produced by The Sheringham Shantymen.

On Saturday a street collection was held in Sheringham town centre with over £1,700 generously donated by the public to the RNLI, a particularly impressive figure considering it was a cold winter Saturday and relatively quiet compared to the busy summer months.

Sheringham & Cromer Roundtable donated 50% of their New Year’s Day Dip profits on Sunday to Sheringham Lifeboat Station. The station provides an invaluable service to the local community, and donations such are these contribute towards the running costs of the station.

Pictured here are some of the Sheringham Lifeboat Station crew, including along with Sheringham & Cromer Roundtable Chairman Will Moy, who presented the cheque to the Station.

The Dip itself had over 400 dippers, with over 1000 in attendance watching the brave souls enter the water. Profits were generated from generous donations made by those in attendance on the day. The remaining 50% profits will be sent out to other local causes in the coming weeks. Any group wishing to ask the Roundtable for support should contact their Facebook page.

Stage and screen star Suranne Jones has stepped into a new role - as president of Sheringham Little Theatre.

The multi award-winning actor best known for Vigil, Gentleman Jack and Dr Foster, was unveiled at the annual meeting of the charity trust which runs the community arts venue.

She takes over the honorary title from Lady Walpole who succeeded her late husband Lord Robin Walpole in 2022. Lady Walpole steps down after the couple completed a total of 50 years in the role.

Suranne, who is a frequent visitor to North Norfolk and the theatre with her family, said: “When we first visited the area I was excited to see Sheringham still had The Little Theatre and it wasn’t long before we started coming along. Theatre in rural areas is so important, not only for audiences to see shows they may not be able to easily see, but also for young people who may not have an outlet for their creativity and have no idea how to get into the business.”

Laughs, chills, a dance party and comic opera are part of the cocktail of summer entertainment being served up by Sheringham Little Theatre.

The annual summer theatre, which has been running for more than 50 years, is building on last year’s successes when it opens on July 30 with a series of four productions.

The team who staged a hilarious spoof of the Hound of the Baskervilles are back to deliver a madcap version of The Three Musketeers.

Internationally-acclaimed men’s singing group , The Sheringham Shantymen, are looking for bass and harmony singers to join their crew - could this be you?

Initially formed in 1988 as The Augusta Singers, The Sheringham Shantymen officially came into being in 1990 and continue to raise huge sums of money for the RNLI and other local charities through their popular performances of historic sea shanties and well-known folk songs.

The group is comprised of around 25 members from all walks of life and perform 20-30 gigs each year at venues as varied as church halls, carnivals and lifeboat days all the way to sell-out shows on Cromer Pier and the annual Falmouth International sea shanty festival.

On Saturday 28th October The Sheringham Shantymen put on a special performance at St Peter’s Church, Sheringham to help raise additional funds required to purchase & install a new defibrillator on the outside of Oddfellows Hall, Sheringham.

The majority of the funds for the defibrillator had been raised by the late, great Bob Brewster, landlord of The Crown Inn and his team of fundraisers (through pub quizzes and collections) in memory of Crown Inn local George ‘Okie Dokie’ Love.  The funds were just shy of the figure needed so The Sheringham Shantymen stepped in to help raise the final amount and there is now enough to complete the purchase and installation of the defibrillator.

On Sunday 13th August Sheringham RNLI held their annual Lifeboat Day. Hundreds of people flocked to the lifeboat station to see the lifeboat demonstrations including a mock rescue of a swimmer (played by Sheringham helmsman Steve Banks) and a joint demonstration involving Sheringham Lifeboat and both of Cromer’s Lifeboats.

There were also displays by the local HM Coastguard team, a tombola with prizes donated by local businesses, a teddy tombola, refreshments stall and a Welly Wanging competition.

At 1pm The Sheringham Shantymen put on a free performance with a collection in the famous RNLI yellow wellies at the end by crewmember Leanne McColm and Sam Farrow and at 3pm the station held their annual lifeboat service with representatives from all of Sheringham’s churches and music provided by the Sheringham Salvation Army band.

A first for Sheringham RNLI

Last week Sheringham Lifeboat station celebrated it’s first ever female tractor driver. Rachel Rickett passed her final assessment to drive the 10 tonne amphibious Talus MB-4H MKII lifeboat launching tractor and is one of four ladies now part of the crew at RNLI Sheringham.

Joining the Shore Crew in 2021, Rachel aspired to drive the tractor from day one, Rachel said “I’ve always admired the volunteers of the RNLI and when I finally moved to the coast from Essex I decided to join up at Sheringham. I love being part of the team and being able to give something back to the community is so rewarding”.  The combined weight of the tractor, trailer & Atlantic 85 lifeboat is around 15 tonnes so launching the lifeboat with her four crew in all weathers is a huge responsibility.

Sheringham / Cromer cliff-top path

On a clear winter day a walk along the cliff tops offers an impressive 360⁰ view over both land and sea.

Keep an eye out for kestrels on the wing and listen for cormorants as you follow the rolling coast path, meandering over close-cropped grass and scrubby thickets. During autumn these areas offer a prime location for foraging Sea Buckthorn.

Bristly bushes with inch long spines may appear intimidating at first, but the tightly clustered berries, amber in colour, offer up a bounty to those who are willing to commit a bit of time and effort. Take along a sturdy tub and a pair of gloves and your cliff top walk will provide an abundance of culinary potential.
