Norwich Market wins prestigious award

Norwich Market has won the Best Independent Food and Drink Award at the prestigious EDP Norfolk Food and Drink Awards 2017, which took place at Norwich Open last night (September 11). The annual awards, run in association with East of England Co-op, celebrate everything from great chefs to fabulous produce, pubs and restaurants. Sweet treats specialist, Figbar, which has a stall on Norwich Market, won the award for best newcomer.

The council-run market has had a fantastic year with occupancy rates soaring from 76 per cent to 91 per cent, with many new food stalls joining up. The market now has a more diverse range of eating options than ever before offering alongside its long-standing fish and chips, bacon rolls and hot dogs, also South East Asian, Spanish, Italian, French and Chilean street food along with fresh  juices, falafels, lasagne and deli sandwiches.

The recent arrival of pop-up stalls has given the market even more of a boost by allowing people the opportunity to try trading on a trial basis. To add to its accolades Norwich Market was also named one of the ten best markets in England by the company Culture Trip, which has over 9 million monthly readers. Norwich City Council's cabinet member for the market, Cllr Roger Ryan said:

“This year has been a great leap forward as the first year of our ten-year plan to rejuvenate the market but we are not resting on our laurels and we will be continuing to work hard to sustain and build on the success we have already achieved.“Winning the EDP Food and Drink Awards is the real icing on the cake and a reflection of what we have to offer.”

Mark Wright, Chairman of Norwich Market Traders Association said:“All the traders are extremely proud to have won this award. I don’t think the quality, value and choice that Norwich Market has to offer can be matched in any direction for a hundred miles and you can make that 200 miles if you exclude London!"

  • Celebrate Leap Year at The Maids Head Hotel and The Ship

Leap Year brings with it the gift of an extra day, a bonus 24 hours that needs to be celebrated. Not only that, those born on the 29th of February have a rare opportunity to celebrate their birthdays. Imagine a birthday that arrives only once every four years. This demands recognition and the opportunity to celebrate with loved ones.

For centuries, Leap Year has also been seen as the chance for females to propose to their partners. Legend has it that St Bridget, a 5th century nun, made a deal with the patron saint of Ireland St Patrick. They agreed that women could propose to men on this day every four years! So let’s celebrate birthdays, new engagements or simply just the fact there is the gift of an extra day in this year’s calendar and let’s really make it count!

The Maids Head is committed to transforming Thursday, 29th February 2024 into a memorable day, and our Stay and Dine sleep offer is set to make it truly exceptional.

  • St Martins awarded city honour for its services to homeless people

St Martins Housing Trust has been given Honorary Freedom of the City of Norwich, following more than 50 years’ service and support to people facing homelessness. The honour was awarded by Norwich City Council at a special meeting of council.

After starting out in a garage shed in the Cathedral Close half a century ago, St Martins has grown into an established charity which provides not only hundreds of beds and homes to those in need, but delivers education, training, psychological intervention and partnership work with other city organisations.

St Martins is now a key partner in delivering Norwich City Council’s rough sleeping strategy, which seeks to break the cycle of homelessness through prevention, intervention, recovery and systemic support.
