Winning was a piece of cake for Wednesday

Local business woman Wednesday Batchelor from Unicorn Cakery and Delectables in Wymondham won top prize in South Norfolk Council’s Victoria Sponge Bake Off competition.

Her prosecco soaked Victoria sponge, with white chocolate buttercream and homemade cherry jam had the judges heading back for seconds and thirds when the competition ran earlier in the month at South Norfolk on Show.

Having quit her job in May as a facilities manager to spend more time with her one-year-old daughter Isabella, Wednesday was keen to raise the profile of her new business.

She said: “It was a great opportunity to get my name out there and good fun too. It was lovely to see everyone enjoying my baking, I don’t think there was much cake left after the judging! It was fantastic to win.”

Her prize included two tickets to the world’s biggest cake decoration event in Birmingham plus a bag of goodies from sponsors Cake International.  The competition was open to all local businesses that have been awarded 4* or 5 * hygiene ratings by the Council.

South Norfolk Council’s Deputy Leader Councillor Michael Edney, who was lucky enough to sample the winning cake, said: “We are one of the best local authority areas in the country for our food hygiene ratings and this was a great - and delicious way, to say thank you to local businesses for maintaining such high standards. Well done Wednesday, it was a very tasty cake!"

A recent study by the Food Standards Agency revealed that out of 360 Council areas in England, Wales and Northern Island, South Norfolk has the 2nd highest percentage of eateries with top marks, with 98% achieving 4* or above.

Councillor Edney added: “Businesses in the area are working hard when it comes to hygiene and are exceling, which is great news for our residents and visitors to the area. Our Food and Safety Team are always on-hand with support and advice if needed and work with businesses to help them achieve top marks.”
