The Borough Council of King's Lynn & West Norfolk is once again stepping back in time for their fun, free, family event: Forties Lynn - Life on the Home Front.

On Sunday 23 July from 10am to 4pm, locations around the town centre of King's Lynn will host activities that explore what life was like for Lynn's residents during the Second World War.

Cllr Elizabeth Nockolds, borough council cabinet member for Culture, Heritage and Health, said: "Lynn's wartime history is fascinating, and this event brings that history to life in a really fun and informative way. We're emphasising the way Lynn's brave residents 'kept calm and carried on' by focusing on the music and style of the decade; it's good to remember that during tough times for our town and our nation, our spirit was undaunted".

The Tuesday Market Place will be full of activity during the day, with a display of military and civilian vehicles from the era; including cars, motorbikes, jeeps and a collection of vintage bicycles. Fans of the television series 'Dad's Army' will be pleased to see the return of Corporal Jones' butcher's van.

Music performances from Timescape will add to the 1940s atmosphere, as will the costumed characters - a range of British and American wartime figures, including Winston Churchill - who will be strolling around the square. The Royal Norfolk Regiment Living History Group will set up camp, and talk to visitors about what life was like under canvas during WWII.

The Eddie Seales Big Band will be performing live on the market place. This exciting 18-piece orchestra of highly-talented musicians will perform a broad selection of music from the era, including Glen Miller. Performance times will be close to 1pm and 3pm, weather permitting.

Visitors will also have a rare chance to explore the air raid shelters beneath the Tuesday Market Place. Bridge for Heroes will lead fascinating tours around the shelters, which really give a flavour of what it would have been like to run for cover at the sound of sirens. Entry will be free, but there will be a voluntary collection for charity.

At King's Lynn Town Hall, Esther and David from Cactus Promotions will host a 1940s tea dance. Those who don't know their lindy hop from their jitterbug needn't worry, free dance lessons will be on offer before the dance. Everyone can also get into the 'Make Do and Mend' spirit that defined the home front, by getting tips on surviving on rations, planting a seed as they 'Dig for Victory', and collecting a fun 'sweets ration card'. Fans of 40s fashion can get a mini-makeover and hairstyling tips from Flamingo Amy.

Lynn Museum is offering free admission as part of Forties Lynn, and will be offering a range of activities for all ages: visitors can make a plane for the Spitfire fund, make their own wartime truffles, and collect their sweet rations.

Everyone is encouraged to come along dressed up in their best 1940s clothes, and get into the swing of things!
